Blue Meanies

Psilocybin Mushroom Strain Guide

Origin

Blue Meanies, scientifically known as Panaeolus cyanescens, are a highly potent strain of psychedelic mushrooms that derive their name from the cartoon antagonists in the Beatles’ animated film Yellow Submarine. In the movie, the Blue Meanies are whimsical, surreal characters that embody chaos and disorder, much like the intense, mind-altering effects these mushrooms are known for.

Native to tropical and subtropical regions, such as Southeast Asia and Australia, Panaeolus cyanescens mushrooms are smaller and more delicate than their Psilocybe cubensis counterparts.

Appearance

Blue Meanies, scientifically known as Panaeolus cyanescens, are a distinctive species of psychedelic mushrooms with a delicate appearance. They typically have thin, fragile stems that are white to off-white in color, often turning a bluish hue when handled or bruised—an indication of their high psilocybin content. The caps are small to medium in size, generally light gray or off-white, and convex when young, flattening as they mature. The caps can also display a pale brown or tan color, sometimes with a slightly darker center.

The gills underneath the cap are tightly packed and dark, usually transitioning from light gray to black as the mushroom matures. Unlike some other species, Panaeolus cyanescens does not have a veil or ring around the stem. The combination of their delicate structure, bluish bruising, and pale coloration makes them visually distinct from other mushrooms, particularly the larger Psilocybe cubensis varieties.

Expected Experience

Blue Meanies are revered for their intense psychedelic effects, often considered much stronger than typical Psilocybe cubensis strains. Users frequently experience powerful visual hallucinations, heightened emotions, and deep spiritual or introspective journeys. Due to their potency, they are generally recommended for more experienced psychonauts.

Dr. Delic’s Field Notes

The first time I took Blue Meanies I was with an experienced friend who identified them in a pasture.  We took the time to boil them into a tea and went hiking to a waterfall the next day. It was a bit of an amateur at the time, had not really prepared myself for an enduring hike and was a bit dehydrated by the time we got there.

“Glancing up at the huge water-stained black cliff wall I witnessed my first real ‘hallucination’. The cliff was rippling like a wave and the small trickle of water at the center was cutting through the rock like butter, I felt dizzy and decided a little lie down might help.”

Luckily my friend had more foresight and after a little rest and some of his water the rest of the trip went swimmingly.
