Origin

The A+ strain, also known as the A-strain, is a well-known variety of psilocybe cubensis mushrooms that gained popularity for its above-average potency and ease of cultivation. This strain is favored by both novice and experienced growers due to its relatively straightforward growing process, which can yield good results when provided with favorable conditions. However, despite its potential for high yields, achieving multiple healthy flushes can sometimes be challenging because the strain is prone to contamination issues during cultivation.

The A+ strain was originally developed by a well-known breeder and Shroomery contributor named “Mr. G,” who also developed the popular strain B+. It’s unclear whether he discovered the strain or where exactly he found it. However, this strain clearly thrives in more tropical or subtropical growing conditions and likely comes from either a South American strain or Southeast Asian Psilocybe cubensis strain. Over time, this strain became widely available and is now sold by most major spore distributors. Its popularity has also extended to the streets, where it is relatively common. This combination of potency, accessibility, and ease of growth has made A+ strain a staple in the psychedelic mushroom community.

Appearance

A+ strain mushrooms, also known as A-strain, have a classic psilocybe cubensis appearance with some distinguishing features. Their caps are typically medium to large and start as a deep golden or caramel brown when young. As they mature, the caps lighten in color, becoming a paler yellow or tan. The caps are usually convex when young but flatten out with age, sometimes developing a wavy or irregular shape around the edges.

The stems are thin, sturdy, and white to off-white, often growing tall and gangly. The gills underneath the caps are tightly packed and start off as light gray, darkening to purplish-brown as the mushroom matures.

Expected Experience

The experience of A+ strain mushrooms is above-average in potency, providing subtle visual effects like enhanced colors and gentle patterns without being overwhelming. Users report a balanced blend of euphoria, introspection, and creativity, often leading to a boost in mood and mental clarity. The emotional tone is calming, with a sense of peace and connectedness throughout the trip. Lasting 4 to 6 hours, it’s a well-rounded, manageable experience, making it suitable for both beginners and those seeking a mild yet meaningful psychedelic journey.

A+ is one of the first wildly distributed, domesticated strains of mushrooms and so my first experience with them was when I was young. Me and my friend Dan had setup a projector and record player to really set the stage. During the come up I had felt uneasy largely due to my inexperience. However, when the visuals kicked in things changed.

“What was so great was that our visuals were IDENTICAL. We both saw at exactly the same time, interconnected fluorescent red and yellow geometric shapes (either triangles or 3D squares) across the whole of our field of vision. This may have been triggered by the computer visualizations. Dan then went downstairs to set up the projector screen and, in this time, my geometric shapes became what appeared to be fluorescent waves of light. I was absolutely convinced that I had witnessed the particle/wave duality theory firsthand (that light can be both waves and particles at the same time) and that I could physically see waves of light. I got a new burst of euphoria and realized that I felt as if I had had this massive burden lifted from me. Everything was great, my life was great and more importantly, I had absolutely nothing to be afraid of. It was as if during the uneasy phase at the beginning of my trip, my brain had been working out its inner conflicts and now they had all been solved.

I don’t think I have ever felt so blissfully content and complete on any previous drug experience.
